Abstract: This paper is a first draft version envisioning an encompassing research on knowledge media, i.e. the question how to model the new media, how to understand communication and cognition processes in the new media, how to design products in the new media. The then planned book"Wissensmedien" has still not appeared yet, but the text – as raw as its current state is – has proved to be seminal in the environment of Prof. Beat Schmid and his chair at the Institute for Media and Communication Management at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. In the meantime, numerous research papers and teaching material about his concept of media, about the according media reference model, about media and communication management, about the design of digital products etc. have been worked out and published. This paper defines knowledge media as a communication sphere in which agents are able to exchange knowledge. Agents are defined as being humans but also artificial knowledge-carriers, as e.g. machines. Concepts to register or record disseminated knowledge and common knowledge of agent communities as well as concepts to describe the effects of information flows and processing are modeled with the concepts of computer science. The author defines the mentioned communication sphere as a variety of possible locations (distributed virtual environments) of agents and as a system of channels which serve the purpose of knowledge transfer between the agents. He investigates a logical space containing notions and classes of possible worlds linked to the notions which can be mirrored in the medium.Knowledge media are constitutional for knowledge communities or networks, they make communication possible and let them form an entity – a"world". The text further deals with aspects of the evolutionary dynamic of knowledge media (comparing the biology based genes to knowledge based memes) and the adaptation to the truth in terms of correspondence with reality. Finally, the author proposes an architecture for knowledge media in general.
